The Sky Blues have failed to beat any of the other teams in the top six and are 15 points behind table toppers Leicester City in the title race. Manchester City had topped the table for as many as 13 weeks during the first half of the season but have since fallen away with an injury crisis the main problem for their failures to capitalise in the league.
The list is topped by La Liga leaders Barcelona followed by arch-rivals Real Madrid. Defending Bundesliga champions and current league leaders Bayern Munich are in third. Atletico Madrid and France’s Ligue 1 champions Paris Saint-Germain complete the top five.
Serie A giants Juventus are the best ranked Italian side while the only two Premier League sides in the top 10 are City (9th) and Arsenal (10th). The other Premier League sides on the list are Chelsea (12th), Tottenham Hotspur (15th) and Manchester United (16th). Liverpool (23rd) are outside the top 20 with even Ukrainian sides Shakhtar Donetsk and Dynamo Kyiv above them.
How the Euro Club Index works
According to the website, the Euro Club Index (ECI) ranks clubs across Europe and “shows their relative playing strengths at a given point in time, and the development of playing strengths in time”. This helps them calculate and predict results (win, draw or loss) for upcoming matches.
The values for the ECI are derived from both historical results and current results in the league, domestic cup competitions and European matches. The recent results have a higher weightage in calculating the ECI.
