La Liga has been dominated by the big two, Real Madrid and Barcelona for ages. They have finished among the top two, eight times in last nine years and shared the League title 54 times among themselves.

All the star players of Spain either dawn the Barcelona jersey or the Real Madrid jersey or they leave the country. Notable examples are, David Villa who left Valencia F.C to join Barcelona. Fernando Torres, David Silva, Juan Mata left Spain to play in Premier League.

This two sided dominance is slowly killing the other clubs in Spain. No other clubs have had enough money to compete at the European level. Thus, Spanish participation in the European competitions narrows down to two sides.

The big two clubs of Spain have the majority fan following, hence they generate maximum income. They also receive €140 million through TV money, which is huge compared to Atlético Madrid and Valencia, both on €42 million and the teams in the bottom half accounting to €15 million.

The Spanish Government in 1990 made a rule that all clubs except Madrid, Barcelona, Athletic Bilbao, Osasuna will become limited companies and thus not being a member owned club. Therefore, these clubs get the monitory benefit of the memberships.

The European Commission may force the clubs to leave their privileged status in Spain, keeping in mind the betterment of Spanish as well as European Football. The commission also says that there have been a lot of illegal monitory aid by the state given to the two big clubs. Investigations are going on for the same.

An European Commission spokesperson said: “in contact with the Ombudsman” over the issue of Madrid and Barcelona’s member-owned status and expected “to take a position as regards state aid to professional sport in the near future”. She added “the commission is looking at the situation of this [sic] clubs at a preliminary stage”

European Commission is all set to take away all the privileges of the two big clubs .
